I do not wish to oppugn the character of Miss Goodrich by bearing false witness in regard to her activities.
-- Jeffrey D. Marshall, The Inquest
Most of the time we are our own harshest critic. We oppugn ourselves for the littlest of things. Partying too much, not eating right, exercising only once a week, being lazy... that's just my own personal list, but I know many of you out there do the same thing to yourself. Why do we bully ourselves? Is it because we aren't in school anymore and miss the taunts of the kid whose parents didn't love him/her enough? Is it society constantly bombarding us with images and messages about who/what we should be doing with our lives and we are constantly falling short of the ideal? Am I just a super paranoid, highly self-critical person?... uh, yes.
How does one break free of the oppressive oppugn of oneself? I have a few ideas, but as usual, they are much easier said than done.
The "Much Easier Said Than Done" list:
1. Make lists (shocking) of the things you would like to accomplish or small errands you need to take care of. Try to cross at least one off the list every day. You can't be mad at yourself if you are making progress.
2. Meditate using a positive mantra. I was in the habit of meditating for about a week straight, what amazing dedication (humph), and I found myself much calmer and less negative. Even if you meditate for only 10 minutes in a day it can really help get the nasty chatter out of your head.
3. Play more music. This might just be one tailored specifically to me, but I always feel better while listening to music. Music is inspiring and just plain enjoyable. Find a way to get more music in your day either during your exercise time, ha, while you are cooking dinner or while working on the computer.
4. Buy some jeggings, lots of jeggings. (No, I am not being compensated for this statement by the magical people who make jeggings.) Anyone who has struggled with finding jeans that fit properly can identify with the stress and trauma that occurs when you think you have found some that fit and then get super saggy butt, or worse, muffin top syndrome after wearing or washing the jeans only once. Jeggings are lovely in that they fit snugly but also have some delightful stretch that prevents crack attack and low crotch. I must add here that depending on the quality of your jeggings purchase, you might need to replace your jeggings often. They have a tendency to get a little blown out if you where them almost every day, trust me.
5. Get some alone time with your friends.Even one hour spent in the company of a good friend can do wonders for mental clarity and stress relief. If this is not the case for you, then you might want to consider changing your identity, starting a new life somewhere, and making new friends. (I don't have the stones to break up with a friend, so it would be easier for me to enter witness protection.) Talking with a good friend can hep you wade through all your criticisms and doubts and file them in to "Good, I'm not Crazy" or "Wow, I Might Need Some Professional Help".
I am tired of the daily oppugn. I want to enjoy the time I have before the imminent apocalypse or zombie plague. This list will help me and I hope it can provide some assistance to other oppugners out there.
